Why it matters
Chrome, Edge and Firefox each release a new version about every four weeks, plus urgent security fixes in between. An old browser misses those fixes, and some sites stop working with it. Updating is free and usually takes a minute.
On a computer
| Browser | Steps |
|---|---|
| Chrome | Menu (⋮, top right) → Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome checks and updates. Press Relaunch. |
| Edge | Menu (…, top right) → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge. Press Restart when it asks. |
| Firefox | Menu (☰, top right) → Help → About Firefox. On a Mac: the Firefox menu → About Firefox. Press Restart to update. |
| Safari (Mac) | Safari updates with macOS: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update. |
Menu names can differ slightly between versions.
On a phone or tablet
| Device | Steps |
|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | Safari updates with the system: Settings → General → Software Update. Chrome, Edge and Firefox update through the App Store. |
| Android | Open the Google Play Store, search for your browser (for example Chrome) and press Update if it shows. Samsung Internet can also update through the Galaxy Store. |
If it will not update
- Restart the browser, then the device. Many updates download in the background and wait for a restart.
- Check the system itself. Old versions of Windows, macOS, iOS and Android stop getting new browser versions. If yours is out of support, the browser cannot catch up.
- Work or school computers are often updated by the IT team on their own schedule. Ask them if it stays behind.
- Run our health check again after the restart to confirm.
